Regulation of wheat and peanut allergens in cosmetics

Allergies to wheat and peanuts are well known in food. Also skin contact with these substances can also lead to the development of corresponding allergies. For this reason, the EU has regulated the use and quality of wheat proteins and peanut oils in cosmetic products.

In Regulation (EU) 2017/2009 amending Annex III of the EU Cosmetics Regulation, limit values are defined for these ingredients:

  • Peanut oils used in cosmetic products may only contain a maximum concentration of 0.5 ppm of peanut proteins.
  • The restriction for hydrolyzed wheat proteins is based on the average molecular weight of the peptides. The maximum value for the average mass is 3.5 kDa.

The Regulation (EU) 2017/2009 can be found here.
From 25 September 2018, cosmetic products placed on the market must meet the above requirements.

Would you also like to have your cosmetics tested for the absence of allergens?
