FDA Announces Inspections for FSMA’s IA Rule for Food Facilities to Begin in 2020

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced during a public meeting that routine inspections to verify compliance with the Mitigation Strategies to protect Food Against Intentional Adulteration (IA) rule will begin in March 2020.

Under the IA rule, facilities that manufacture, process, or package food intended for human consumption are required to implement a Food Defense Plan. Food defense plans describe the risk assessment of the food facility to identify vulnerabilities and the development of mitigation strategies to protect against those vulnerabilities. These plans are intended to protect the food supply from deliberate acts of adulteration that could lead to wide spread public harm.

Large food facilities are required to comply by July of 2019 and the FDA will begin routine inspections for compliance with the IA rule in March 2020.
